In June, EU citizens will vote in the tenth European Parliament elections as the current five-year term comes to an end. More than 700 seats across 27 countries will be contested. In the last five years EU authorities have tabled and developed a range of laws and legislation that directly impact business travel. Here, Catherine Logan, the GBTA | Global Business Travel Association regional senior vice president, EMEA and APAC, looks at some of those key developments and what the outcome of this year’s elections could mean for travel and sustainability initiatives. I'm delighted to be joining my friends from the Nordic Business Travel Associations today as a guest speaker (for, you guessed it, #Sustainability in #CorporateTravel) for their GBTA | Global Business Travel Association Fundamentals of Travel Management (Nordic Edition) course. Thank you Sari Viljamaa, carl moltzau, Jens Søndergaard & Fredrik Hermelin for the invitation and trust in me to deliver such an important topic to your audience. As we take stock of the recent (and far from insignificant!!) developments that have already emerged in the broader sustainability landscape since the start of 2024, I believe many of us are feeling the pressure for this category. It's no longer just about "ticking the box" or placing a few questions in an #RFP - many organisations and travel buyers need a strategy, and ultimately an assurance they are mitigating against future risk. #EmissionTransition, #LowestLogicalEmission, #EmissionReduction - these are now core pillars of the modern #SustainableTravel programme and areas many of us still feel unprepared for. Next week starts the Nordic Business Travel Associations course in "Fundamentals of Business Travel Management" (Nordic Edition). The program will dig into the art of managing a travel program. GBTA | Global Business Travel Association defines Travel Management as the process of strategically managing an organization's business travel program to maximize efficiency, minimize costs, ensure compliance with policies and regulations, and enhance traveller satisfaction and safety. This involves various activities such as negotiating, with suppliers, implementing policies and procedures, providing support and assistance, monitoring travel expenses, analyzing travel data, and continuously optimizing the program to meet the organization's objectives and the needs of its travellers. Travel management aims to balance the interests of the organization, its employees, and other stakeholders while achieving the best possible outcomes in terms of cost savings, risk mitigation, and overall travel experience.
